The government has recently announced that those who are planning to fly out of Malaysia will have to start paying tax in the form of a departure levy that ranges from RM8 to RM150 beginning 1st September 2019.
The amount charged will vary depending on the passenger’s destination abroad and whether the flight is economy class or business class.

For those flying out of Malaysia to any Asean countries, economy class passengers will be charged RM8 and RM50 will be charged for those not flying economy.
The Asean countries include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
If you’re flying from Malaysia to any other countries outside of the Asean region, a departure levy of RM20 will be charged for those in economy, and RM150 for other classes.

According to the Departure Levy (Rate of Departure Levy) Order 2019, “economy class refers to flights that are advertised and sold by airlines using economic terms or their equivalent, or having the lowest prices when compared to other packages,” Malay Mail reports.
Finance Minister, Lim Guan Eng noted that the departure levy will be imposed beginning 1st September but infants and toddlers aged below 24-months-old will be exempted, as well as pedestrians.
Aircraft passengers who are transiting via Malaysia will also be exempted from the levy as long as the transit period does not exceed 12 hours.
Crew members on duty on board any vehicle - including aircrafts or vessels, or anyone who drives or rides any type of vehicle for personal use (including aircraft or vessel) and their pillion riders or passengers are also exempted from the departure levy.

Before you decide to take your chances and not pay the departure levy, passengers who fail to pay could be fined up to RM500,000, imprisoned for up to three years, or both; according to the Departure Levy Act 2019’s Section 9.
So take note if you or anyone you know is planning to travel out of the country anytime soon!
