Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod praised the young actors’ “unique” talent, expressing excitement for the world to see them “work their magic onscreen.”

Joining the new Hogwarts students are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. More casting announcements are expected soon.

The three young leads are relative newcomers. McLaughlin will appear in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow and the BBC’s Gifted. Stanton played Matilda in Matilda: The Musical in the West End.

Author JK Rowling will serve as an executive producer on the series, which HBO describes as a “faithful adaptation” of the beloved books. The series will span at least a decade, allowing for a deeper dive into the books’ stories compared to the films.

Filming kicks off this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, with the first season likely to air in 2026 on HBO Max.
