Kuey Teow has always been a debatable topic for Malaysians, from how it’s cooked to how it’s spelled. But the debate on its spelling has officially come to an end.

The spelling for kuey teow in Bahasa Melayu is now officially standardised as “KUETIAU”.

The new proper spelling was confirmed after Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka (DBP) announced an image with the official spelling.

The image shows two spellings: kuetiaw goreng and koay teow goreng, marked as incorrect and kuetiau goreng as the correct one.

Many Malaysians commented on the post welcoming the official spelling for the word and many saying there are too many different spellings for the word seen at different stalls.

Some also said that it’s pronounced differently even in different Chinese dialect and it doesn’t matter how it’s spelled as long as they get to eat the delicious noodles!

“I was not aware that the government body has posted a clarification on the kuetiau spellings but I believe it’s a good move, as currently there are many versions of the spellings of the dish name in the market,” Kapitan Tan Yit Sheng, a Kuching Coffeeshop and Restaurant Owners Association committee member told The Borneo Post.

“I welcome the standardisation of the spellings so that all customers would not be confused about the dish they are ordering due to the different spellings,” said a kuetiau seller named Lai.

Hopefully the new spelling will be more widely known and we won’t have to be confused on how it’s spelled in the future anymore!
