With so many movies being released in the month of February, you probably wouldn’t expect a Chinese movie to be at the top of the box office… but The Wandering Earth proved the competition wrong!

The China produced movie took the world by storm with a record breaking box office take of RM1,419,487,700 ($349 million) on its first week, topping the opening week gross of RM1,376,099,939 ($338 million) for Avengers: Infinity War.

The Chinese science fiction movie begins 2,500 years after the people of Earth built giant thrusters to move the planet to a new star system after the Sun died out. However, on their course to revive the planet, Earth got caught in Jupiter’s magnetic fields.

The movie is based on a novella of the same name by author Liu Cixin and has a budget of RM203,380,000 ($50 million).

The Wandering Earth is now the highest grossing movie of 2019, with Glass in second place, and it’s looking like it might stay the same until Avengers: End Game is released later this year!

Seems like Hollywood has some tough competition to face now! Did you watch the movie? Let us know your thoughts on it!
