Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid remake has been getting a lot of attention lately, with Harry Styles and Melissa McCarthy being rumoured to play Prince Eric and Ursula respectively.

And while Zendaya was previously rumoured to play the role of Ariel in movie, Halle Bailey has just been confirmed to be playing the little mermaid!
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall said in a statement.

Jacob Trembley and Awkwafina will also be playing Flounder the fish and Scuttle the seagull.
The singer from the R&B duo group, Choe x Halle also tweeted about the news on her Twitter account and many people are praising Disney for casting a girl of colour to play the role.

Halle Bailey, a Black teens who wears locs, being cast as a Disney princess is what dreams are made of. Imagine what just seeing her onscreen will do for this generation of Black girls.

The live-action movie previously wanted to star Chloe Grace Moretz as Ariel but she dropped out instead. Melissa McCarthy is still in talks to play the sea witch Ursula.
