This Skyscraper Is So Thin, It Can Sway In The Air

Windy days will definitely be something else.

Skyscrapers are now a status symbol for many developed countries to showcase the best architectural landmark of its home nation on the global stage.

But the question raised (pun not intended) for these super tall buildings is “how tall can a skyscraper get until things get a little wobbly?”

Enter Steinway Tower. An 84-story luxury apartment building in Manhattan, that stands at a height of 1,428-feet tall but is only 60 feet (18 meters) wide.

For comparison, the Steinway Tower’s width is almost the same as a bowling alley’s length.

Although this luxury residence is constructed out of the world’s strongest concrete, it is not immune to the phenomenon which affects all skyscrapers - swaying.

Structural engineers, Rowan Williams Davis and Irwin shared that a 1,000-foot tall tower can sway from a few inches on a typical windy day to two feet (0.6 meter) on a rare windy day. The trick is to design them in a way where residents never actually feel the movement.

Steinway Tower is known to be a type of pencil tower - super-skinny skyscrapers- which first became popular in the 1970s.

Steinway Tower may hold the title of the world’s skinniest skyscraper, but the prices of housing in the recently inaugurated edifice are anything but slim. Studio apartments start at $7.75 million (RM33.7m), while the triple penthouse at the top is priced at an eye-watering $66 million (RM287m).

Would you live on one of the top floors of this luxurious residential tower? Let us know in the comments  down below.
