Xabi Alonso has reached an agreement in principle to become Chelsea’s next permanent manager. 

The official appointment is expected to be completed in the coming days.

The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid boss will take over from Liam Rosenior, who was sacked by the London club last month.

Separately, an announcement is expected in the next 48 hours to confirm Michael Carrick being given the Man United manager’s job on a permanent basis.

The current interim boss is expected to sign an initial two-year deal with the option of another 12 months.
