Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has just announced that recreational activities at swimming pools, rivers, lakes and in the sea will be allowed once again beginning 1st July!

The Senior Minister noted that public, private, hotel, condominium and gated community pools will be permited to operate once again but they must adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

These SOPs include having a lifeguard or supervisor present at all times to monitor the number of users and ensure that SOPs are practiced and adhered to by all.

“They will not only have to monitor the safety of users but also ensure that the number of people allowed in the pool is in proportion to its size,” the senior minister said in today’s press briefing.

“So it can’t be crowded in the pool,” he continued. “They might also have to limit the amount of time people are allowed in the pool.”

Besides constantly having lifeguards, SOPs include having pool users maintain social distancing of a minimum 3m, between each other.

Pool users are also required to shower before and after using the facilities and once finished with their swim, users are urged to leave the area as soon as possible.

Chlorine-level checks must also be frequently conducted.

Wading pools will also be opened but the senior minister has advised against allowing young children into pools for now. This decision however, is up to the discretion of parents as well as the swimming pools’ management.

According to the senior mister, authorities will be conducting checks to ensure that SOPs are complied with when pools are open once again.

Before reopening their door, all pools must notify local authorities and register with the International Trade and Industry Ministry at http://notification.miti.gov.my/.

While swimming pools are allowed to operate once again beginning 1st July, water theme parks however must still remain closed and will not be allowed to resume operations until further instructions are given.

July is definitely looking to be a great month!

With cinemas reopening again, and swimming now allowed, it is important to remember that we must all do our part in ensuring that we follow the SOPs provided and maintain social distancing measures wherever we can.
