
Malaysia does not need a specific law to impose the death penalty for drunk drivers involved in fatal accidents.
The Transport Minister says such drivers can already be prosecuted under existing laws, such as the Penal Code for murder.
Anthony Loke also ruled out imposing a mandatory death sentence for drunk driving, as the govt has already abolished it for other capital offences.
He adds that instead, his ministry is focusing on amending the Road Transport Act to make it easier for victims to claim compensation without being forced to go through a lengthy civil court case.

Authorities have identified 170 petrol stations where police personnel will be deployed to deter fuel smuggling.
