The Education Ministry along with the Health Ministry and National Security Council, have developed detailed guidelines for schools to reopen in Malaysia.

New normal practices have been included in the guidelines to be adopted by students when school reopens such as temperature screening, isolation rooms, eating in classrooms and more.

"We are also aware that some students walk or cycle to school and the temperature could be slightly above 37.5°C... so these students will be asked to rest first to ensure their body temperature returns to normal before it is checked again,” said Education Minister Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin.

"Each school will have an isolation room. If the student shows any symptoms they will be brought there and the school, besides contacting the parents, will also contact the nearest health centre for further action."

The senior minister also added that students will only be allowed to eat their meals in their classrooms and are only allowed in the canteen in stages to make sure they don’t gather in the canteen at the same time to buy their food.

"Students need to buy packed food and will be queuing with a 1m gap between each other before returning to their classrooms to eat,” the minister added.

Tables in classrooms will also have a one meter gap and extra students will be placed in another class. Similar rules will be applied to school labs and teachers’ rooms to maintain social distancing.

"We sincerely hope students will practice social distancing while they are at school and throughout their journey to and from school, ” Mohd Radzi said.
