While going to school may seem like a chore to many, some are grateful just for the opportunity to step into a school. Sophy Ron is one of those who did not let her golden opportunity go to waste.

Sophy first stepped into school at the age of 11 thanks to the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF). Prior to that, she was rescued from the notorious Phnom Penh garbage when she was a child.

Now, Sophy has just graduated as a valedictorian from Trinity College at the University of Melbourne!

While that may not seem like a huge achievement for you, bear in mind that Sophy only begun her education at the age of 11 and has managed the honour of being chosen as the valedictorian to deliver the closing speech at her graduation ceremony.

That’s definitely something to be impressed by, and we surely are!

Furthermore, Sophy is one of the first CCF students to win a coveted full scholarship to Trinity College and is now about to begin her degree at The University of Melbourne.

Before she began her schooling experience, Sophy would spend seven days a week, picking through knee-deep noxious trash at the dump to earn money for her parents. She survived by eating discarded food that she managed to scavenge from the dump.

Standing in front of her peers as she delivered her graduation speech in English, Sophy stood as a “confident and articulate young woman on the verge of the next chapter of her life.”

“I was very excited but very nervous,” Sophy said after the ceremony. “The event went very smooth. It was awesome.”

Sophy’s story is definitely one that inspires us to achieve the impossible and helps us appreciate all that we have in our lives. We hope that this story inspires you too!
