As kids, our parents have always encouraged us to go outside and discover the world a little bit more. But this 11-year-old boy from China’s discovery will blow all our discoveries out of the water.

While playing out near a lake in Heyuan, Guangdong Province in China, Zhang Yangzhe accidentally stumbled upon a “strange stone.”

Upon closer inspection, the 11-year-old suspected that the “stone” could in fact be a dinosaur egg instead and it turned out that the boy was right!

According to LADBible, the boy had been trying to look for something that could crack open walnuts when he found the “special rock” with some circles on it. Upon noticing the circles, he called his mum over to take a closer look.

“I thought it was a cement circle at first,” Zhang told the Heyuan Radio and Television Station. “Later, I asked my mum to look at it and thought that the shell was like a dinosaur egg.”

Being the science-enthusiast that he is, Zhang said that he recognised the pattern on the shell from seeing similar fossilised eggs at the museum.

“I have learned this knowledge in the books and in the cultural corridor of the school,” he said. “I have seen it in museums. Different dinosaur eggs have different shapes.”

Zhang’s mum, Li Xiaofang, noted that “The stone is partially exposed. The shell is below, I think it is similar to the dinosaur egg seen in the museum.”

His mum then decided to call the authorities and the two stayed guard over the site until officials arrived.

After examining the 3.5-inch-long egg, excavators found a nest of 10 more eggs nearby!

Experts from Heyuan Dinosaur Musuem confirmed that the “stone” found was indeed a fossilised dinosaur egg and is said to belong to the late Cretaceous period, around 66 million years ago.

The nest of dinosaur eggs has been taken to the museum for further studies to determine the type.
