We’ve heard it many times before, buckle up when you’re in a car, even in the back seat.

However, not everyone seems to take this seriously and now in 2020, if you’re still stubborn enough to not follow the law, it’ll cost you RM300.

It has been mandatory for passengers in the backseat to use their seatbelts in Malaysia since 2009.

According to road safety department (JKJR) director-general Datuk Rosli Isa back in January 2019, usage of the rear seat belt is now compulsory in 2020.

“While the law for use of rear seat belts in cars has been in place since 2009, enforcement has been erratic,” he said. “This will change by 2020, and the government is serious about it from the standpoint of safety.”

The director-general also noted that an accident happens on Malaysian roads every minute, with a fatal case occurring once every 70 minutes.

A study by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety research (MIROS) in 2007 found that up to 50% of the fatal, serious and minor injury cases could be reduced if all passengers (front and rear) wore seatbelts.

Backseat passengers who are caught without their seat belts on could face a fine of RM300.

So remember drivers and passengers, buckle up or it’ll cost ya! Share this with all your loved ones.
