Can you imagine waking up one morning with an itchy eye, and when you rub it, you find a worm?!

We’d much rather not imagine that.

Abby Beckley noticed something itching her eye and found a little wriggling worm! Then, the worst case scenario happened. She went to the doctor and the doctor didn’t know what wrong with her, but he DID pull out two more worms. (AAHHHH!)

She was referred to an eye specialist, who pulled out another two worms from her eyes. The eye specialist also didn’t know where these worms were coming from.

Eventually, Abby went to an infectious disease specialist where they discovered that she had been infected with an eye worm that usually only affects cows.

Thelazia Gulosa is spread by flies and as it turns out, a few weeks prior, Abby had been walking through cattle fields, and a fly brought the worm larvae into her eyeball.

The doctors reported that this is the first case of Thelazia in a human in North America in more than 20 years. It’s also the first human case ever for this particular worm species.

Abby’s doing alright now and hasn’t found any worms in her eyes for over 18 months.

Let’s definitely not go there again…
