Café Rothe in the city of Schwerin in Germany recently reopened its doors to the public and they’re taking every measure possible to ensure that its customers are safe and practice social distancing while doing so.

To mark the its reopening, the café introduced pool noodle hats for its customers to wear.

Yes, pool noodle hats.

Speaking to CNN, owner Jaqueline Rothe explained that local TV company RTL – who were filming the reopening of cafes and restaurants; came up with the idea to have customers wear pool noodle hats to ensure social distancing.

“This was the perfect method to keep customers apart,” she said. “And a fun one.”

“It was a perfect gag and of course it was funny, our customers were really into it,” she went on. “But what it did show to us (was) how difficult it is to keep a distance of 1.5 meters.”

Jaqueline shared a photo of the café’s customers with their new headgear on its Facebook page but she never thought that their methods would gain worldwide attention.

According to the owner, the café and confectionary shop usually has 36 tables inside and 20 outside in warm weather. But with the new SOPs in place, the café has had to cut down.

“With the new hygiene and social distancing measures we only have 12 tables inside and only eight outside,” Jaqueline said.

“We will see what to expect when Germany opens up further, more people are allowed to travel and we have more tourists coming in the next few weeks, we will take it as it comes,” the owner added.
