The acclaimed British stage and film actor passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 88, his agent confirmed in a statement.

“It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88,” the statement read. “He died peacefully in hospital with his family and carer,” adding that his illness was Parkinson’s related. “Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”

The actor “had a kind of magical malleability, with a range that went from the sweet-tempered to the psychotic,” The New York Times wrote.

Besides his brilliant role as Bilbo in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Sir Ian played many other iconic roles including science officer Ash in the chilling 1979 movie, Alien and trainer Sam Mussabini in 1981’s Chariots of Fire – for which he received a BAFTA award and Oscar nominee.

In 1967, the actor won a Tony Award for his role as Lenny in playwright Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming and in 1998 won the Laurence Olivier Award for his portrayal of King Lear.
