With the final season of Game of Thrones drawing closer and closer, it’s easy to forget exactly what happened in the previous seasons. We wanna help you get caught up with all the important bits before heading into the final season.

Warning: spoilers definitely ahead.

1. Season 1, Episode 1: “Winter is Coming”

Key takeaways: The prologue, character introductions, Ned and Robert in the crypt.

The episode that started it all. Before heading to the possible end of the Seven Kingdoms, the first episode brings us back to the start of each character in the series. After seven seasons, these characters have grown, faced insane amounts of adversity and even *gasp* died. Many might not remember but the first episode gave us the real introduction to the White Walkers and what they’re fully capable of.

2. Season 5, Episode 8: “Hardhome”

Key takeaway: Learning how the White Walkers fight and what a war against them would look like.

In this episode, we get a taste of what exactly a war between the living and dead will be like. When Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch attempt to rescue wildlings on the other side of the Wall, they meet their match in the Night King who raises every wight that’s been killed, ever. “Hardhome” marks the beginning of winter and the horrors that will soon face the people of Westeros. Back in Winterfell, Sansa Stark learns about the murders of her younger brothers by the hands of Theon Greyjoy aka Reek. Across the Narrow sea, Tyrion Lannister strikes an alliance with the Mother of dragons.

3. Season 6, Episode 5: “The Door”

Key takeaways: The Night King’s origin story and how he found Bran Stark.

Before the Night King begins the ultimate battle for the Seven Kingdoms, the episode focuses on the Three-Eyed Raven who stands guard between the living and the dead. As Bran is being trained to replace him, the Three-Eyed Raven takes Bran back in time to see the birth of the Night King. In this episode, we find out how the children of the forest first created the White Walkers in hopes of driving the first men out of the country. But as we all know, that plan backfires tragically and sees the dead sweep across Westeros, destroying everything in their wake.

While Hodor meets his tragic end, its easy to forget that the Night King joins Bran in his visions and when they meet face-to-face, the Night King marks Bran, allowing him to see through his eyes, even as he remains in Winterfell in season 8.

4. Season 6, Episode 10: “The Winds of Winter”

Key takeaways: Cersei becomes fully unhinged, Daenerys sets sail, and the confirmation of Jon’s parents.

After watching Cersei slowly become unhinged in the past seasons, she finally descends into madness and she destroys her own city – and her own child in the process. Her brother, Tyrion meanwhile, convinces Dany to finally leave Essos and set sail for Westeros with her dragons.

Another huge moment in this episode is of course the revealing of Jon’s actual parents. While we were lead to believe that Jon was Ned’s illegitimate child, the truth comes out and the running theory that Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen are actually Jon’s parents, is confirmed.

5. Season 7, Episode 7: “The Dragon and The Wolf”

Key takeaways: The wall coming down, the meeting and drawing of sides and the revelation of Jon’s parents.

While fans take note that Lyanna and Rhaegar are the true parents of Jon Snow, this episode reveals that the couple were actually married. This revelation not only proves that Jon is a true Targaryen but also the only one with the strongest living claim to the Iron Throne. Yes, even stronger than Daenerys.

In this episode, the allied front of Jon and Dany meet Cersei and compel her to help them fight the army of the dead, who have since taken down the Wall and are making their way into Westeros with Viserion, the ice dragon by their side.
