South Korean film Parasite recently made history by being the first foreign film to ever win Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards! And while everyone is celebrating the film’s success, a Tamil film producer is planning to sue them instead.

After Parasite’s success, many Tamil fans are claiming that the movie is a rip-off of a 1999’s film Minsara Kanna. And while most people laughed off at the claims, the producer of the Tamil film is taking it seriously.

Producer PL Thenappan who holds the rights to the movie revealed in an interview that he’s planning to sue the Korean film for plagiarism.

“On Monday or Tuesday, I will be filing a case with help from an international lawyer. They have taken the plot from my film. When they find out that some of our films have been inspired by their films, they file cases. Similarly, it is only fair for us to do the same.”

The 1999’s Tamil film starring Vijay, Rambha, Monica Castelino and Khuhbu in the lead roles follows the story of how Kaasi and his entire family was employed one by one into a family to seek the approval from the family of the woman he loves while keeping their identities a secret.

Parasite recently won four awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. The film follows the story of how a poor family of four infiltrates a wealthy household as workers and feed off them.

Though the characters’ motives and plot trajectory are different, many fans tweeted about the similarities between the premise of the two films on social media.

Did you happen to have watched both of the films? Tell us your thoughts on the producer’s action to sue the Korean film!
