If you’re one of the few who hasn’t seen Avengers: Endgame just yet, we advise you to stop scrolling. Spoilers are definitely ahead.

Now that the spoiler ban has been lifted, we can safely talk about what happened in Endgame and why it did.
In particular, we’re talking about Doctor Strange’s 1-in-14-million possibility that was victorious thanks to Tony Stark aka Iron Man’s heroic sacrifice. Remember when the Doctor saw that one possibility in Infinity War? Now we know exactly what it was that he saw in it.
When all the Avengers who had been dusted return for the ultimate battle at the end of the movie, Iron Man asks Doctor Strange about that one possible outcome in which they would win, the Sorcerer Supreme however, would not reveal it until the very end.
Endgame writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to explain what Doctor Strange actually meant/saw.
“The only way this works is if Tony dies. If you go back and watch Infinity War, when [Strange] says 'one,' Benedict … is just choked on emotion. Now that you know the end, go back and watch that moment. He means, 'You're going to have to die, Tony.'"

Ultimately, Endgame serves as the end of Tony’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but the filmmakers took the opportunity to give him the perfect farewell in the best way.
"We had the opportunity to give him the perfect retirement life, within the movie," Christoper told the New York Times.
"He got that already,” Stephen added.

"That’s the life he’s been striving for," Christopher said. "Are he and Pepper going to get together? Yes. They got married, they had a kid, it was great. It’s a good death. It doesn’t feel like a tragedy. It feels like a heroic, finished life."
Director, Joe Russo , spoke about the choices in the movie with Comic Book and explained that “all heroes are made complicated by the circumstances in their life, right?”
“"Tony is essentially an egoist, and what is the essential conflict for an egoist? Is it about what the egoist wants, or is it about subjugating the ego to what others may want from them? And family is really the most essential way to get to that conflict with Tony,” he added.
So that means that Doctor Strange really did see the final battle exactly like how it played out. He knew, five years before, that Tony would make the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe. Our hearts just broke a little bit more.
