Malaysians have now turned their attention to what comes next, following the fall of the Perikatan Nasional government.

Harris Zainul, an analyst at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia weighs in on the road ahead...

"The Constitution is quite clear in that whoever commands majority support of the MPs will be appointed the next PM. What is still somewhat unclear
is how the support will be proven. a special parliamentary sitting should be convened as soon as possible for all potential PM candidates in a more transparent manner in the Dewan Rakyat.”

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stepped down as Malaysia’s 8th Prime Minister yesterday after just 17 months in office, the shortest stint of a leader in the country.

Muhyiddin will stay on as caretaker prime minister until his successor is appointed, possibly this week.

UMNO suggests that a “war cabinet” focused on national recovery should be formed, adding that GE15 can be held once the country has reached herd immunity.

Its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also denied eyeing prime minister post.

On the other hand, Amanah President Mohamad Sabu has urged all MPs who left Pakatan Harapan to return to the coalition in order to restore the mandate of the people.

The civil service will not be disrupted by Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s resignation.

The Chief Secretary to the Government says the day-to-day administration will continue to be led by the secretaries-general of each ministry and federal department heads as usual.
