The largest and most destructive storm in over 60 years called the Typhoon Hagibis, has just made landfall in Japan.
The super typhoon is the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane and has a diameter of 1,400km with winds of 162km/h at its center and gusts of up to 240km/h. It’s said to be as severe as the Kanogawa Typhoon that killed over 1,200 people in 1958.
Over 8,000 people have been evacuated from regions in the typhoon's path and a further 1.8 million are on evacuation watch while residents share pictures of skies turning purple all over Japan.
The cat-inhabited island, Okishima will be the first to be hit by Hagibis, with other cat islands Ogijima, Sanagishima and Manabeshima to be affected by the storm as well.
A 5.7 magnitude earthquake has been widely felt across Tokyo ahead of Typhoon Hagibis' landfall and could bring record-level rainfall and winds.
Power outages and flash floods are expected to hit areas in Tokyo, Gunma, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Fukushima, Tochigi, Saitama, Kanagawa, Ibaraki and Chiba.
Areas in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Okazaki, Okayama and Kagawa also have a high chance of sudden floods and water levels are expected to rise between 0.5 – 5 meters.
One person was reported to have died in Chiba after his car blew over from strong winds and four are reported missing, with 51 injured so far.
We hope the people in Japan and the Malaysians who are there are able to take shelter from the typhoon and we pray for their safety.
