If you’ve ever got to wear a plaster cast before you’d know how itchy and troublesome they are, but not anymore!
Engineering students from the University of Illinois came up with the idea to create light-weight and waterproof arm cast to replace regular plaster casts that cause itchiness and may sometimes lead to sores and infection.
Named Cast21, they managed to design the mesh sleeve that patient can slip onto their wrist and filled with liquid resin that hardens and set the bone in place!
"We have this radical notion that you can enjoy your healing experience. You don't need to be restrained from daily activities,” said Cast21 vice president of engineering, Veronica Hogg.
Fitting the cast is reported to take as little as ten minutes and it’s breathable and hygienic to use!
The doctors will measure the patient’s limbs and then fit the cast with a mix of resin that would then harden, keeping the limb and bones in place.
Instead of removing it with a circular saw for plaster cast, Cast21 was “designed so that a physician can take clinical shears, snip through the tabs and pull it open easily."
"It was designed to completely eliminate the use of a cast saw and make the healing process far more pleasant for the patient.”
"We don't want this to be a luxury product," Veronica explained. "We are still conducting research in price sensitivity, and the final cost to the patients will be depending on their insurance and doctor."
We can’t wait for these light-weighted and waterproof cast to be available but hopefully, we won’t get an injury that requires them!
