Pokémon And Studio Ghibli Voice Actress Dies Of COVID-19

The beloved Japanese actress passed away at age 63.

Many of us grew up watching anime and cartoons, and one of the beloved voice actress known in the world of anime recently passed away from COVID-19 complications.

The 63-years-old Japanese voice actress, Kumiko Okae, has been confirmed to have passed away after a tough battle with COVID-19.

Anime fans will know the actress that’s known for her role in Studio Ghibli’s The Cat Returns, where she played Haru’s mom as well as voicing Officer Jenny in Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.

Kumiko was reported to have symptoms of the virus after she underwent radiation therapy for breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with late last year and it’s believed that her weakened immune system made us susceptible to the virus infection.

“We are very saddened and cannot believe this, it is very frustrating and we cannot think of anything right now,” said her 96-year-old husband/actor Baku Owada and her 36-year-old eldest daughter/actress Miho Owada.

Kumiko was also a popular actress and television presenter in Japan and made her acting debut on the series Omitsu back in 1975 and have appeared in several dramas and variety tv shows. She was also the host of Hanamaru Market, a morning information show, from 1996 to 2014.

The anime fandom recently also lost an iconic anime voice actor, Keiji Fujiwara, best known for voicing Crayon Shin-chan’s father and Leorio from Hunter x Hunter.

Rest in peace, Kumiko Okae. Thank you for bringing the characters we loved to life, your voice will live on forever.
