The fear of getting COVID-19 has made people do unimaginable things, and pets have unfortunately fallen victim to this as many household pets have been discovered to have been dumped by their irresponsible owners.

The Department of Veterinary Services have previously confirmed that pets do not spread COVID-19 but despite that, a total of 38 dogs and cats have recently been dumped.

Malaysia Animal Association president Arie Dwi Andika said that the cases wwere recorded in Kuala Lumpur and that some Persian and domestic long-haired cats were found amongst the pets that were dumped.

Arie said that the dumping cases were believed to have happened because pet owners think that their pets have the possibility of spreading the virus. Some still have their collars intact when they were found looking messy, unmanaged, homesick and in fear.

“According to the Department of Veterinary Services, pets do not spread Covid-19,” he said. “People should not abandon their pets as there is no evidence to suggest that cats, dogs or any other pets can transmit the virus”

The department previous explained that animals cannot contract COVID-19 naturally and the cause of infection in animals was via human transmission.
