Hand sanitisers are becoming an essential item now that the world is facing the COVID-19 pandemic, but if you’re bringing yours out, make sure you don’t leave them in your car!
A fire department in Wisconsin recently warned the public about the dangers of leaving hand sanitisers in the car, especially during a hot day and how it might cause a fire!
The post said that exposing hand sanitisers, which are mostly alcohol based, to the sun “can lead to disaster”.
While some studies says that hand sanitisers require an approximate temperature of 300 degrees to combust and a car can possibly only reach 160 degrees, the fire department said the clear plastic might be the reason behind it instead.
The light focused through the clear plastic can actually increase the temperature inside the bottle to a temperature that’s above the car interior’s and lead to a fire.
"Clear water bottles have been known to focus light to the point that they boil the water and explode. It's also possible when other substances are heated to extreme temperatures."
The fire department also shared how hand sanitisers are highly flammable, especially the spray-based ones and they reminded the public to remember not to use them near an open flame, especially after several people ended up in the emergency room with burns on their hands.
Seeing as how hot Malaysia’s average weather can be and how flammable hand sanitisers are, it is best to not leave them in your car!
