The Australian bushfires have been ongoing since September and have recently reported to have killed more than half a billion animals, including 30% of the region’s population.
Two cousins decided to help save the koalas by driving around Kangaroo Island, a wildlife refuge off the coast of South Australian where many animals have been killed in the flames.
A video of their rescue was posted and went viral showing a car full of koalas, including one mother koala that was cuddling her baby.
“This is our little koala rescue,” one of the teens can be heard saying. “We are just trying to collect as many live ones as we can.”
The teens are 19-year-old Micah and 18-year-old Caleb, and they revealed that about 60 percent of the koalas they came across had unfortunately been burnt to death.
The internet felt proud of the cousins’ actions and applauded their efforts to save the wildlife in danger.
Unfortunately, according to Sam Mitchell, the co-owner of the Kangaroo Island Wildfire Park, at least a third of the koalas that were brought in to be treated had to be euthanised.
“We are seeing many burns to hands and feet—fingernails melted off. For some, the burns are just too extreme.”
The Australian skies have turned red in many areas due to the smoke from the wildfire. Firefighters and volunteers are still trying to put out the fire and save as many animals as possible, with a number of volunteers dead from the forest fires.
