It's a warning we've all probably heard from our parents. Don't eat so much Maggi mee, or your hair will fall out! Although this university student didn't lose her hair, she ended up in the hospital instead!

Hong Jia first made the news headlines in China in the beginning of November when it was revealed that she had only been eating instant noodles since 15th October. Why? To save money for Singles Day - China's version of Black Friday.

Unfortunately for her, all the money she saved to shop, ended up being used for hospital bills instead.

Many university students will know that instant noodles are the cheapest meal you could have. Not only are they cheap, their easy to cook and they fill your bellies. However, they aren't the most nutritious meal, the unusual diet had made her sick.

In a video that went viral, Hong Jia said that she had managed to say 749 yuan (RM453.26) by switching to daily instant noodles. But, she never got a chance to buy all the discounted items she had saved for.

The Chinese media recently reported that the student who had spent the last three weeks eating instant noodles to save money, was now in hospital receiving treatment. All her saved money went to IV drips and medication instead.

Hong Jia told reporters, "I used most of my savings to get better. The IV drips cost me more than 1,000 yuan (RM605.29) and medicine cost more than 100 yuan (RM60.53)."

The university student did not go into details about her health problems but said that she had experienced high fever that required hospitalisation. Although the exact cause of her sickness was not clear, she added that "eating only instant noodles could be a reason."

Social media users who commented on the viral video said that her money-saving diet was bound to backfire. Hong Jia's own mother had little sympathy for her daughter's foolish ways. In a WeChat conversation between the two, her mother wrote, "Even I watched that viral video. You deserve it. Just drink more hot water."

Lesson learnt.
