We’ve heard of people going the extra mile to get their hands on some amazing durian. Some get their friends together and go on road trips just to hunt down the “best” durian in town. But one thing we haven’t heard of yet, is someone paying over RM4,000 for one fruit!

As we all know, durians come in all shapes, sizes and prices. But this new breed of durian might just be the King of the king of fruits.

And if you didn’t know, durians are not only available in Malaysia (although we probably eat the most amount of durians…). The fruit is also enjoyed by many in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, China and more.

The most popular and sought after durian is the ‘Musang King’, which is also the most expensive. Durian lovers don’t mind spending the extra money to enjoy the creaminess and soft texture of the “King”.

However, a queen may have just dethroned the Musang King! A new type durian know as “J-Queen” from Indonesia has taken over as the most expensive durian in the world!

As reported in Tribunnews, the “J-Queen” durian is currently being sold for Rp14 million (RM4,073) per fruit! The insanely priced fruit can be found at Plaza Asia in Tasikmalaya, West Java.

The brain behind this pricey idea belongs to 32-year-old Indonesian psychology major, Aka. He claims to have created the new and rare version of durian by crossbreeding two superior varieties from different regions in Indonesia.

Speaking to Tribunnews, Aka said, “My intention is to improve the welfare of farmers by creating superior durians. I have had durian gardens in Kendal, Pekalongan, Banyumas, Pangandaran and Gunung Tanjung, Manonjaya, Tasikmalaya.”

According to the “J-Queen” creator, it takes over three years to grow the fruit! The tree only bears fruit once every three years and reports have said that the durian has a “peanut and butter taste.” And rather than being typically oblong in shape, the “J-Queen” durian is round and the flesh is a golden yellow.

So far, two “J-Queen” durians have been sold since they were put on display!

Would you pay over RM4,000 to try the “J-Queen” durian?
