The dragons are coming but unfortunately not the prequel!

In case you haven’t heard, the highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel that starred Noami Watts has been cancelled. Yup, you read that right. Cancelled.

This news comes a day after GoT’s David Benioff and D.B. Weiss excused themselves from the Star Wars trilogy due to their “heavy schedules.”

Deadline confirmed that the prequel series – which was set to take place thousands of years before all the events in GoT; will not be going to series at HBO. The cast and crew of the pilot were recently informed that HBO had decided to pass on the project and head into a different direction.

And that different direction is fortunately in the form of another GoT series. Back in September it was rumoured that a House Targaryen-focused series was in the works, and now that rumour has become a reality!

The GoT prequel series, now titled House of the Dragon has received a 10 episode straight-to-series order from HBO, so hopefully there won’t any cancellations on this because we’re super excited to see how and where the Targaryen line began!

Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series will be based on George R.R. Martin’s GoT spinoff book, Fire & Blood. The series was co-created by George and Ryan Condal, who also created the recent sci-fi series, Colony.

Fire & Blood spans across multiple generations of the Targaryen dynasty, but we don’t know just yet on how House of the Dragon will adapt that into the series.

What we do know is that the book starts with the arrival of Aegon I in Westeros as he unifies six of its seven kingdoms. Aegon I is also the reason for the founding of King’s Landing, the building of the Red Keep, and the forging of the Iron Thrones.

No word yet on when House of the Dragon will premiere but we’ll keep you updated.

While we’re disappointed that the original prequel has been cancelled, we’re super excited for the upcoming House of the Dragon!

Would you have wanted to see the original prequel? Let us know!
