You’ve heard of the foods to eat during CNY that’ll bring you good luck for the new year: longevity noodles, fish, and dumplings—but what about those that bring you bad luck?

It’s likely that your mother and grandma don’t even serve them because they already know—but just in case they haven’t let you in on it yet, here are the foods to avoid during CNY:

#1 Porridge/Congee

It’s an age-old belief that congee is food eaten by those who can’t afford a sumptuous CNY meal. Still, eating congee during CNY would mean that you’re starting the year with a bad sign for your Ringgit!

#2 Cuttlefish

The Cantonese meaning of cuttlefish is ‘chao you yu’ is ‘you’re fired’. It’s believed that if you eat cuttlefish on CNY, you’re going to lose your job in the new year. Let’s not let that happen to ourselves in this economy, okay?

#3 Pear

The Chinese characters for pear and separation have the same pronunciation (li). So, it’s believed that eating or receiving pear on CNY will lead to separation—which could probably mean a number of things, like breaking up with your BF/GF (oh no!) or, you know, parting from your money… 😢.

We found a hack though. Apparently, if you’re really craving for a pear, you can eat it, but as a whole—so don’t slice it into pieces.

#4 Fresh tofu

It’s taboo to eat this, because the white of tofu is an unlucky colour, signifying death and misfortune, especially on CNY! 😱

Of course, there are a bunch of other non-food superstitions during CNY too. Here are some friendly reminders—just in case:

Now that you know what to avoid during CNY…

… here's what you should have: your favourite soft drinks, which are now available in an 'auspicious' 30-can carton! Like many numbers in Chinese culture, '30' carries a special meaning. It signifies "sang sang mang mang, sap chuen sap mei"—this is a Cantonese well-wish that can be loosely translated as "enjoy an abundant and healthy life that brings about perfection and good luck in everything that you do".

So, as CNY rolls along, stock up on these auspicious 30-can deals! You can get a carton containing 30 cans of your choice of soft drink, which you can serve to your loved ones this CNY:

  • Pepsi regular (24 cans + get free 6 cans in the carton)
  • Kickapoo (24 cans + get free 6 cans in the carton)
  • 7UP (24 cans + get free 6 cans in the carton)
  • Pepsi Black (22 cans + get free 8 cans in the carton)
  • Revive Iso (22 cans + get free 8 cans in the carton)

Happy Chinese New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai!
