Staying at home hasn’t been easy but for some, they’ve been using their time by exploring new avenues and one Malaysian couple has gained YouTube stardom in the process.

If you’re wondering what their videos consist of that have helped them reach hundreds of thousands of people, it’s something that we all love and relate very well to.

Food. Or, more specifically, cooking food.

Back in January, S. Pavithra and her husband decided to start their own YouTube channel and share their cooking videos following a suggestion from her good friend who was also a “YouTuber”.

Little did they know, Malaysians all over would soon be following their cooking videos avidly in the coming months.

Videos from “Sugu Pavithra” have been popping up all over social media that feature Pavithra and sometimes, her husband M.Sugu, cooking various tasty looking dishes while speaking fluent Bahasa Malaysia.

In just a few months of beginning their YouTube channel, the couple now have over 390,000 subscribers!

The couple, who live in estate quarters, have become YouTube sensations and they now receive a monthly income in US dollars.

“My first dish was grilled tilapia and I spoke Malay throughout the video,” the mother-of-two from Buntong, Ipoh told Bernama. “In just four days, I managed to get 5,000 subscribers on my channel and then I received an email from YouTube to become their ‘partner’.

Pavithra and her husband never thought that their videos would end up being watched by so many people and that they’d have so many subscribers.

“I can speak Malay fluently so why shouldn’t I speak it in my videos?” Pavithra said. “If I speak in Tamil, not everyone will understand. By using Malay, many Malaysians can watch and understand.”

“The most interesting and motivating part is when many viewers left positive comments and asked us to continue doing this,” she added. “Some of them also requested Indian recipies, which is really exciting.”

The couple’s cooking videos have also gained the interest of a number of celebrities who have tried her recipes and uploaded their own attempts that were inspired by “Sugu Pavithra”.

Malaysian bodybuilder Sazali Samad and Japanese YouTuber IChang RM have both tried the couple’s chicken curry recipe that has gained more than 1.3 million views.

Even with just one wok, a spatula and two pots including a rice cooker in her kitchen, that has never stopped Pavithra from cooking.

The “down-to-earth” lady said that she and her husband chose to share simple recipes such as stir-fried eggplant with shrimp paste, stir-fried water spinach and kuih ketayap, that can be made using regular items available in most homes so that viewers could attempt them in their own homes.

Pavithra also shared that she does not have a tripod to mount her phone to record the videos, instead she uses a cup which she puts on a stable surface.

The couple take turns cooking and when it’s time for her to cook, her husband holds the camera and vice versa.

“But when my husband is cooking, it’s me who explains the ingredients and cooking steps because he is shy,” Pavithra noted adding that she edits the videos after they family has had their meal and when their children are asleep.

The couple shared that they are “far from being celebrities”, and that they are still experimenting with different recipes that they hope their subscribers would enjoy and try on their own.

We hope Pavithra and her husband keep making these delicious videos and we can’t to try them out!

Have you tried any of the couple’s recipes? Let us know how it turned out!
