With a grandmother who is interested in politics, this Sarawakian was named Malaysia to celebrate the historic occasion of Malaysia Day. Malaysia Yap was born around 1am on 16 September 1963 on the day that the Federation of Malaysia was formed.

During an interview, she said that she used to get angry when friends teased her about her name. This happened especially when Malaysia lost a football match, “Malaysia kalah” they would say. As Yap grew older, she understood the significance of her name and was proud of it.

Yap was even invited to an Anak-Anak Merdeka gathering in Kuala Lumpur for National Day in 2007. This was where she met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Prime Minister (Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and others who had Malaysia in their names.
“I hope people like myself, who are named after the nation, will not be forgotten,” Yap said.
We’re happy for you, Malaysia Yap! Although we don’t have a cool name like you, we’re proud to be Malaysian.
