6 markets in bangkok where you can eat and shop all you want

Images via Instagram (1, 2)

Talk to any friend who’s been to Bangkok and they’ll tell you that they shopped till they dropped and ate until their stomachs were about to burst 😍.

You can’t blame them; there are so many malls and markets to explore in Bangkok and each is unique in their ways. For instance, you’ve probably heard of Chatuchak Weekend Market, which is also one of the world’s largest weekend markets—with an estimated 15,000 stalls.

But who said you needed to only visit one popular market? Here’s a handy guide for others you’ve gotta explore:

#1 Mai Hua Takhe Market

If you’re the type of shopper who wants a bit of peace while you browse, then Mai Hua Takhe Market is for you.

Located along a canal, this market was originally a single-storey wooden row house. Get a glimpse of old Bangkok and immerse yourself in works by local artists at the monthly art market.

This is one of Bangkok’s popular floating markets! The market is more than 100 years old, and besides shopping, you’ll enjoy scenes of bustling activity.

Get ready to take some awesome pics for your Insta feed, such as fruit and flower sellers with their colourful goods in their small wooden boats.

In between exploring, take a break to get some local delicacies, including mango sticky rice and mini coconut pancakes!

#3 Rod Fai Train Market

Okay, so even though it’s called a ‘train market’, it’s nowhere near one 🤣. It used to be near train tracks, but since the land was owned by the State Railway of Thailand, they had to move.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth exploring though, especially if you’re into vintage items! There’s a wide range of things you can get here, including antique home décor, hanging lights, and more.

P.S The market is also near the Thailand Cultural Centre, where you can learn more about Thailand’s rich heritage when you stop by their theatre and museum.

Looking for retro and rare items you can’t find anywhere else? This is your go-to place. During the day you’ll find electronic products, clothes, and DVDs. At night, you’ll find second-hand items, old toys, and retro prints.

This market is also unique because you’ll need to bring a flashlight with you, as some parts may be dark.

#5 Asiatique Night Market

Asiatique Night Market is newer than most of the night markets we listed. Located next to the riverside, it’s a romantic dating spot. You’ll get to take beautiful pictures of the river views too.

But let’s get back to shopping—there are cheap shoes and clothes, and plenty of souvenirs for you to buy at the market!

Oh yes… you can also stop to get a massage at the massage centres nearby (or practically everywhere in Bangkok really). Did you know that Traditional Thai Massage has recently been added to UNESCO’s list of protected cultural practices. It’s not to be missed!

#6 Chang Chui Night Market

A post shared by Hanson Lim (@hansonlch) on

One of the things that’ll catch your eye about Chang Chu is the decommissioned aeroplane right in the centre of the market. It’s divided into different zones: for example, you’ll discover specialty coffee and Thai food in the ‘green’ zone.

The ‘night zone’ is where the party’s happening! There are theatre productions and live music for you to enjoy, as well as clothing boutiques and a vintage hair salon.

Want a tour around the market if you’re tired of walking? Then get on a tuk-tuk, a uniquely Thai mode of transportation 😉.

Ready for your Bangkok adventure?

Great!

But first, you’ll probably need a place to stay. If you’re looking for a unique experience with your accommodation, we recommend staying at Bangkok Tree House.

The eco-friendly hotel is removed from the congested city centre. You’ll be surrounded by fruit plantations, and marshland of Phra Pradaeng, with a selection of nature-themed rooms, including one that’s literally on a river!

We’ve also got good news—AirAsia flies directly from Kota Kinabalu to Bangkok!

BIG Member all-in one way fare is from RM189, so it’s a promo you don’t wanna miss!

Visit AirAsia.com to book now until 29 December 2019, and travel from 22 January 2020 – 31 August 2020.

Happy travels!
