For most of us, being arrested is a bad thing. Even the mere thought of it can be enough to make people break out in a sweat! But for this man, being arrested was the first step towards making his ‘dream’ come true.

South China Morning Press reported the arrest of a man, identified by his surname Wang, for stealing mobile phones at a hospital. However, he made no secret of his plans – in fact, he wanted to be arrested.

Wang, whose record for theft stretches back over a decade, wanted to be arrested so he could join the Shanghai Tilanqiao Prison’s artistic troupe, an award-winning group who have staged more than 5,700 performances.

“I wanted a stage on which to sing, Once I go to prison, I will be able to bring this to a fulfilling end. I will not repeat the same mistakes, I won’t do it any more,” said Wang, who made a living as an artist in Shanghai.

Wang certainly got his wish – he was sentenced to 10 months in prison and a 2,000 yuan (RM1,224.39) fine. But whether he’ll actually get to join the troupe remains to be seen. The prison released a statement on WeChat saying that the troupe was designed to rehabilitate criminals, not create singing stars.

“Not everyone can join this group,” it said.
