We’ve never left an uneaten durian for so long that it goes bad. So, we can’t say whether or not the smell of a rotting durian could be confused with a gas leak.

But that was what happened on Saturday at a university library in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) sent out an alert about a possible hazard at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) after the smell of gas was reported at the campus library.

At least 500 students and staff had to be evacuated, traffic around the university was disrupted, and 40 firefighters and specialist crews wearing masks arrived on the scene to search for the source of the smell, which just turned out to be a rotting durian left in a cupboard.

According to a spokesperson with the MFB, the smell had alarmed staff and students as it permeated the air-conditioning system.

We’re glad that everyone is safe, but can you imagine how strong that durian must’ve smelled?
